About Kamakura

Birthplace of Japan's first samurai government

Facing Sagami Bay and flanked by hills on three sides, Kamakura is steeped in samurai history. It is the birthplace of Japan’s first samurai government (1192-1333), after centuries of imperial rule. During the Kamakura Period, samurai warriors embraced Zen Buddhism. And 839 years on, 115 Buddhist temples remain dotted around the hills of this coastal town. These rustic temples are full of Spartan charm & understated elegance.

“My two sons (aged 17 & 19) & I visited Japan for the first time in November 2023. With little understanding of the Japanese language & wanting to enrich the experience for the three of us, I booked Brad's Seven Passes Hike. It was a magical day. We hiked along an ancient forest path to a secluded Shintō shrine. From there, we hiked to the Bamboo Temple & sipped some delicious matcha tea. We rounded out the day with a visit to the Great Buddha. The weather was perfect & we took some fantastic shots of the Buddha sitting majestically against the bluest of skies. Brad was super friendly & knowledgeable. We can't thank him enough for enriching our trip. It would not have been the same without his guidance. Thank you so much, Brad". - Dani, Melbourne, Australia
